The Preaching, Teaching, & Healing Ministry of Jesus

Today marks 36 years since hearing those words from the doctor the first time, "You have cancer." July 17, 1986 seems like an eternity ago in some ways, and yet, it also seems like the years have flown by.

A second cancer diagnosis 15 years later (2001) sent my world into a tailspin for a second time. This time it wasn't just me. Now, I was married with two young children.

In 2003, it was open heart surgery. Unfortunately, the chemotherapy had done much more than kill the cancer.

It has been a difficult journey since day one on this earth. Being born with medical issues from the outset sets a pattern in motion. There have been a lot of good times along the way, but there have been numerous challenges as well.

Why do I share this with you? Two reasons:

1. Today's Gospel reading was the story of Mary and Martha. Martha was busy doing things, and she seemed to be a little bit upset with her sister who wasn't helping. Mary simply sat at the feet of Jesus listening. Jesus said, "Mary has chosen the better part."

American culture is good at telling us to be productive. There will always be work to do. Will we do it in a way that truly brings glory to God?  Will we also take sufficient time to sit at the feet of  Jesus?

2. I share this with you to encourage kindness and empathy. All of us are carrying a burden of some kind or another. People look at me and can see no outward physical signs of the struggle that has been life. The scars, both physically and mentally, are quietly concealed out of view. The positive side of this is that I have become much more aware of the journey of others, and the scars that some of them are carrying through the journey of life.

Surviving has allowed me the opportunity to thrive. Making use of the lessons I learned through my own lived experience with suffering has brought a ministry to fruition that I would have never imagined. The privilege of sharing in the preaching, teaching, and healing of ministry of Jesus has brought immense purpose to my suffering.

To all of the people who have crossed my path, specifically because of the sufferings we shared, thank you for enriching my life. I especially want to thank everyone who participated in the support group I helped found with the chaplain at St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles, Missouri from 1986 through 1994. We all grew stronger from hearing the stories of one another.

Who will you bring comfort and consolation to in the days ahead?  Blessings to all of you as we begin a new week.

Are You Living a Life of Abundance? (See John 10:10)

"We were not given our unique talents and abilities to earn a living. They were given to us to create life." ~Marilyn Jenett

I went to the public library and looked for a book from an author I had not read before. I came across "Feel Free to Prosper" by Marilyn Jenett.  I am only 16 chapters into it, but there have been some good reminders about faith, gratitude, the power of words, and so much more.

I did glance ahead to chapter 44, "So What Is Real Success--To You?" I will just leave you with this quote from Paramahansa Yogananda on page 189. "Success is not to be measured by how much material wealth is possessed, but whether you are able to create at will what you need."

May each of us experience "life to the full" (John 10:10) as we grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  Have a blessed Friday.

Hope Lives When WYO-Gives!

Thankfully, many nonprofit organizations across the state of Wyoming will get a little economic boost today.  WYO-GIVES is a twenty-four hour online giving event where people can easily donate to their favorite charity.

As the inflation rate soars to 9.1%, the highest in 41 years, people who are already living on the margins will find it even more difficult to stay financially afloat.  Nonprofit organizations who serve and assist those in the community who are hurting are essential.  Challenging economic times such as these create an even greater demand for the services offered by many nonprofit agencies.  Unfortunately, these difficult economic times can also impact many donors as well.  It can become a double whammy--greater demand and lower donations.

If you feel inclined to support twenty different Wyoming nonprofit organizations with one gift, you can do so here:

The MR-340 Race Begins Tomorrow

This is what it looked like last year at the start of the race in Kansas City.  Their website introduces the race in this way:

"Imagine a race across the entire state of Missouri, just you and your boat thrown against 340 miles of wind, heat, bugs and rain. This ain’t no mama’s boy float trip. This race promises to test your mettle from the first stroke in Kansas City to the last gasp in St. Charles. Just entering it will impress your friends. Finishing it will astound them… and winning it? Well, you always thought you were sort of a legend anyway, didn’t you? It’s time to prove it.

The Missouri 340 is an endurance race across the state of Missouri. Competitors will start in Kansas City and finish, some of them anyway, in St. Charles. With numerous towns and hamlets, the course offers plenty of opportunity for resupply while enroute. The Missouri River is also incredibly scenic and isolated in some stretches, with wildlife and beautiful vistas to rival any river in North America. But if you’re trying to win this race, you won’t have time to enjoy any of it.

Participants are allowed exactly 85 hours to complete the course. There are checkpoints along the route where paddlers are required to sign in and sign out. Cutoff times will be associated with these checkpoints based on the 85 hour pace. Failure to checkpoint deadlines is grounds for disqualification. To finish this race in 85 hours is a huge accomplishment. Only 2/3 of the teams were able to do that last year."

It all starts tomorrow.  Participants from across the country are signed up.

Good luck to all of the racers--Kansas City to St. Charles, Missouri.

Nonprofits in Laramie County Making a Difference

We are less than a week away from Wyo-Gives Day.  The rain stopped just long enough on Thursday for us to get a group photo at the new Cheyenne sign near the Depot.  [That is yours truly behind the letter Y.]

This weekend we will hear the Gospel story of "The Good Samaritan."  Jesus tells the story about a man falling victim to robbers as he went from Jerusalem to Jericho.  He then describes a priest, a Levite, and a Samaritan encountering the victim along the road.  After sharing that the priest and the Levite just kept on passing by without stopping to help, Jesus goes into detail about how the Samaritan cared for the victim.  Jesus then asks the scholar of the law, "Which of these three, in your opinion, was NEIGHBOR to the robbers' victim?"  The scholar of the law answered, "The one who treated him with mercy."  Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

Who will we lift up each day by our acts of mercy?

Have a blessed weekend!

When You Can't See Where The Trail Goes...

What kind of critters are hiding in the bushes or in the rocks?  Is there a malicious individual hiding somewhere just waiting for the opportunity to attack an unsuspecting hiker?  Is it dangerous or adventurous?

Are these common-sense concerns, or illegitimate fears?  I would probably need more information about the location of the trail and the history of the area before making those assessments.

What opportunities in life do we miss because of fear?  What calamities are we spared because of prudent caution?  How do we find the proper balance?

Are you waiting for me to give you the answer to those questions?  Don't hold your breath waiting for that.  I am simply asking the questions.

The Gift of Freedom--Don't Take It For Granted!

We are blessed to live in the United States of America.  Although we as a nation are extremely divided on many issues facing us today, we are still free.  Let's pray and work to stay free.

The challenges we see in our world today can seem far out-of-reach for us to address in any meaningful way.  However, I continue to believe that each of us can make a positive difference in our little corner of the world.  As you celebrate today, please remember we are free to be a beacon of God's light to others.  Be aware of the opportunities that you have for bringing hope and healing to others.  Spreading joy can be contagious.

I was going to use a photo of the flag, the Liberty Bell, an eagle, or some other patriotic symbol for this post.  I decided to go with my publicity photo from when my book was published.  Why?  I wanted to remind myself that the patriotic symbols are not just "feel-good" objects to decorate our landscape for one day.  Each of those symbols reflect sacrifice on the part of many who have gone before us.  Will that dream of freedom come to an end soon, or will each of us cherish and protect the unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness given to us by God?

How will I respond to God's call in my life to build the Kingdom of God?

The 5-K for "NEEDS Inc. Food Pantry" Is In The Books

Maria and I did the NEEDS Inc. Food Pantry 5-K this morning.  We looked up our score from last year, and we did it in just under 53 minutes.  This year we did it in 57 minutes. This was my first attempt at going more than a mile since COVID hit me so hard last summer.  I am grateful to see my stamina getting better.  Maria wasn't pregnant last year when we did it.  Given these circumstances, I think we did pretty well only adding 4 minutes to our time.

It did not seem like there were as many participants this year, but I hope it was still a successful fundraiser for NEEDS.

NEEDS Inc. -- 50 Years of Service (Firecracker 5-K)

Who is ready for the Firecracker 5-K on July 2 in Cheyenne, Wyoming?  I turned in a blazing speed last year of 57 minutes if I remember correctly.  I am looking to do it even more slowly this year.  However, I want to finish before they close the course after 90 minutes.

Participating in the 5-K and supporting the good work of NEEDS Inc. is a splendid way to begin celebrating the holiday weekend.  To all who strive to make our communities stronger, thank you!  To everyone who has supported NEEDS in one way or another over these last 50 years, thank you.  Have a blessed and safe holiday weekend.  Don't take freedom for granted.
