How many hours of study does it take to become a Thunderbird pilot? How many hours of flight time are required to be considered for possible entrance onto the Thunderbird team? Once accepted, how many hours of practice are put in so shows can be flawless and safe? How much discipline is needed for each individual?
Looking at the picture behind the Thunderbirds, how many hours of practice does the cowboy have to put in to make it to the "Daddy of 'Em All"? How much discipline does the cowboy need to learn his skill well?
The doctor, the lawyer, the businessman, the welder, the plumber, the farmer, and a lengthy list of other occupations all require immense skill. There can be college degrees, trade school, apprenticeships, and generational learning that helps each person be the best they can be at their particular craft. It does not happen without work. How much discipline is needed to excel in any of these fields?
This begs the question. Do we believe holiness comes without work? What kind of discipline do we need to grow in holiness? Was growing in discipline part of your Lenten journey?
As we approach Palm Sunday and Holy Week, I invite you to make it a week that changes your life. How? The answer will be different for each of us. What troubles your heart right now? Where do you need God's grace and healing? What sin is holding you in bondage? What relationships need mending? What part of your prayer life needs more discipline? Open yourself to God's grace during this Holy Week!
