Our statues, even our crucifixes, look clean and sterile. Christianity appears to be a safe and sanitary journey based upon much of our sacred art and architecture. However, anyone who has attempted to truly follow the teachings of Christ recognize the fallacy in such thinking. The radical nature of the Gospel message is anything but neat and tidy.
When was the last time you felt uncomfortable standing up for Christian values and teachings? The glitz, the glamour, the wealth, and the power of the social elites runs rampant. When was the last time you embraced the poor in a tangible and concrete manner? Our secular society is consumed with moral degradation and death. When was the last time you you did something to specifically build a culture of life?
Fr. Daniel Berrigan said, "If you want to follow Jesus you better look good on wood." If you haven't felt the cost of discipleship lately I encourage you to spend some time in prayer and reflection. Allow the Holy Spirit to move within you during these days between the Ascension and Pentecost. Step out in faith. Be not afraid!
