Today's first reading at Mass has long been a favorite of mine. It starts out with a mandate to "Rise Up!" I need to be reminded of that on a frequent basis.
"Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come,
the glory of the Lord shines upon you.
See, darkness covers the earth,
and thick clouds cover the peoples;
but upon you the LORD shines,
and over you appears his glory."
I felt a need to get out of the house this morning to get some fresh air. The temperature had climbed out of the teens into the low 20's. Heat wave!
The railroad tracks pictured above caught my attention with the rails glistening in the snow and bright sunshine. I stood there in the quiet of the early morning and looked off into the distance as far as I could see. As I remained still, and squinted my eyes to see where the tracks headed off into the east, the words of Scripture kept coming back to me. "The glory of the Lord shines upon you."
What will our lives look like in 2021 if we live it with the belief that the glory of the Lord shines upon us?
