There is no doubt that being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 25 changed my perspective immensely at a young age. The shortness of time and the length of eternity has maintained a prominence in my thinking that I had not anticipated. It has been a double-edged sword at times. It prompted me to take risks rather than settle for the status quo. It also prompted me to over-plan in case my life ended sooner rather than later. I wanted to be sure my family was taken care of in the event I was no longer there to help provide for their needs. I really never imagined I would make it this long.
I enjoy sometimes looking at various lists of what happened on this day in history. Which famous people were born on this day? Who died on this day? Once again, it prompts me to reflect upon how I am living each day. I will give you a couple of examples from today.
It was not necessarily popular to like the music of "The Carpenters" when I was a young man. However, I never was part of the "cool crowd" so it didn't really matter. I thought Karen Carpenter had an amazing voice. She died on February 4, 1983 at the age of 32. If you know the story behind the scenes, it gives you a different perspective as you watch videos of her singing. Can you see the pain in her eyes? It is a somber reminder that all of us are carrying burdens of one kind or another.
Liberace died on this day in 1987. You have to love the famous people who only need one name to be recognized. Right?
On this day in 2015, hackers stole the personal data on up to 80 million customers of health insurance provider Anthem, Inc. Technology is great, but it has its downsides as well.
Sometimes, looking at past events reminds me that I am getting old. It was on February 4, 1974 that Patricia Hearst was kidnapped by Symbionese Liberation Army. I can remember as a child watching things like this every evening on the news. It was beyond my comprehension to grasp the nuances of what these things meant. If I am honest, I still struggle to understand the nuances of all the foreign diplomatic relations.
When was the last time you heard the name Dan Quayle? He celebrates his 75th birthday today.
Why did I walk through this little bit of memory lane? I wanted to remind myself, and possibly you, to live each day with purpose. Don't allow the precious gift of time to slip away unnoticed. Have a great Friday.
Blessings and peace to each of you reading these pages!
