Our table in the cafeteria was surrounded by windows on three sides. Enjoying the sunshine and looking out over the well-manicured campus was very pleasant. There are times when the simple pleasures mean a lot. I had been away from home quite a bit over the last ten weeks. This opportunity for lunch with just the two of us was a welcome gift. Having a conversation without the distractions of television, e-mail, or text messaging was an added bonus. A trip through the campus library at the end of lunch was the icing on the cake.
As I watched the young people on campus it reminded me of how many years have come and gone since my own college days. (A recent invitation to my high school 40th class reunion did that as well.) It was nostalgic to think back to the hopes, dreams, and aspirations that I had as a young man. Some of those dreams came true; many did not. Through the struggles and challenges of life have come many blessings. While things did not turn out the way I imagined in many cases, some of the results have been better than expected. Being diagnosed with cancer at age 25 certainly changed the trajectory of my life. Planning for circumstances such as that never crossed my mind.
Where is all of this going? I simply encourage you to take some time to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. I did that today and it was a blessing indeed. Thanks for lunch, Joe.
