The Church celebrates the life of Saint Maria Goretti on July 6. She is the patron saint of youth, young women, purity, and victims of rape. Our world today could certainly use some help in the areas of purity, modesty, and respect for the human person.

Maria Goretti died from being stabbed multiple times as she resisted being raped. The date of her death is July 6, 1902. While she is often referred to as a patron saint for purity, she is also a model of forgiveness. I encourage you to read about her life and the impact she had on her attacker, and indeed, the whole world. (Spoiler alert: her attacker was present for her canonization in 1950.) Her desire for holiness can inspire each of us to pursue the same.
