Nine eleven is firmly etched in the fabric of my mind
Peace and tranquility in our world is difficult to find
Acts of terror and violence have struck us to the core
Are we now accustomed to such cruelty and gore

From 1978 to 1995 the “Unabomber” caused much grief
Eight life sentences for Ted Kaczynski may be too brief
Although terrorism was not the official charge of his crime
The string of bombings has resulted in him doing hard time

On February 26, 1993 we found out the dangers of parking
Below “Two World Trade Center” a bomb left its marking
Thousands were injured and six were killed in the horrific blast
The hurt is still fresh; has it really been over 20 years in the past

April 19, 1995 is a day etched in the history of Oklahoma City
168 people were killed and more than 700 injured—what a pity
I often wonder what someone like Timothy McVeigh was thinking
Killing innocent people, including children, without even blinking

On July 27, 1996 a bomb ripped through Centennial Olympic Park
Eric Robert Rudolph had successfully and effectively made his mark
Atlanta had become another city attacked in a methodical way
A concert in the middle of the Olympics was the center of the fray

The subject which prompted this writing happened 13 years ago today
September 11, 2001 filled us with anger, grief, shock, and utter dismay
Four U.S. airliners were hijacked and the destruction was immense
Watching the news coverage on that fateful day was extremely intense

New York was one of the targets of the terrorists’ plots and schemes
Huge explosions and raging fire—I can only imagine the screams
Two planes crash and 2,753 people are killed at the Twin Tower site
Whether we were looking for one or not—this was sure to cause a fight

The Pentagon was also on the list of buildings to be struck a blow
The intent was to crash the plane and set the institution aglow
That fiery crash resulted in 184 people being counted among the dead
As the day progressed there was an increasing level of anxiety and dread

The crash in Pennsylvania attests to the bravery of people under stress
What would have happened if the plane had made it to its destined address
If the capitol building had indeed been hit by the hijacked plane
There would have been many more than the 40 people slain

How can we ever comprehend the immense toll these attacks took on us
Ground Zero will always be much more than a place we visit on a tour bus
Overall, 2,977 people lost their lives on 9/11 in the orchestrated attack
The shattered lives, the broken dreams, all are things we can never get back

As we move on and try to put the chaos and destruction out of our mind
Another act of terrorism is committed and inner peace is hard to find
The reality of our contemporary world is not something we eagerly embrace
Especially when we go through tightened airport security at a snail’s pace

On November 5, 2009 destruction once again hit on our native soil
32 wounded and 13 killed—another attack that made our blood boil
It was not considered a terror attack—this shooting at Fort Hood
But a lot of people around the country certainly think that it should

A venture out east is the final stop on this trip down nightmare alley
We have traversed a lot of ground—it could be called Death Valley
The Boston Marathon attracts people who are in shape and like to run
Normally the end of the marathon is filled with excitement, joy and fun

On April 15, 2013 the marathon’s ending was disrupted in a major way
An explosion killed three and injured at least 264 on this particular day
It was a solemn reminder that the world in which we live is full of vice
Some people take advantage of freedom and exact a vengeful price

On this anniversary of 9/11 let us stop for a moment to pray
Will we allow God to enter our lives and truly show us the way
It does not matter the level of anguish, heartache, and strife
Jesus will always be our comfort--the Way, the Truth, and the Life
