We typically celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord on March 25. (That is nine months from December 25, when we celebrate the birth of Christ.) Since March 25 fell on Good Friday this year the feast was moved to today, April 4. This was the first open day since the Triduum. During the Octave of Easter (8 days) we celebrate each day as a Solemnity and no other feast days, even a solemnity, can supersede the Octave days.
How frequently does the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord land on Good Friday? This overlap has happened just three times in the 20th century (1910, 1921, and 1932) and twice in the 21st (2005 and 2016). It won't occur again until 2157. Thus, this was the last time any of us will experience the overlap.

If we meditate upon the original 15 decades of the rosary, we see quite clearly the joy exhibited in the first five mysteries. However, these joy-filled mysteries lead to the sorrowful experiences of our Savior during his passion and death. The end result is glory.
