The Catholic Church is rich in its symbolism. The mother pelican plucking its own flesh to feed its young is one such symbol. A chasuble (priest's outer vestment at Mass) worn by one of our local priests had the above depiction of the pelican. What does it mean for us to participate in the Eucharist? Is it something we take for granted, or do we really cherish the opportunity? I was reminded of the value of the Eucharist by my mom just weeks before she died. She told me that she missed being able to go to Mass on a regular basis once she moved into the nursing home. They only had Mass once a month at the nursing home and many times she wasn't well enough physically to travel to the local parish. Even at 91 years of age she was still being a parent and trying to guide me in the ways of faith.
Do you need a renewal in regard to your fervor of participation at the Eucharistic liturgy? If so, I would recommend that you take out your Bible and read John's Gospel chapter six nice and slowly. Prayerfully meditate on the words and allow God to touch your heart.
